Pet-Friendly Plants

If you love having plants in your home or have decided to create a garden, you are likely aware that some plants could have an adverse effect on the air in the home (especially if you have certain allergies!), while some make your indoor air cleaner. If you’ve just welcomed a pet into your home or want to add more plants to your indoor space that won’t harm the pets you’ve had for years, it’s important to know which plants won’t poison your cat or dog. There are several pet-friendly plants available for indoor growth that are particularly safe for your pets, so keep these recommendations in mind as you decorate your home or add more plants to your outdoor garden space.

Spider Plant

The spider plant is very easy to grow indoors and doesn’t take much maintenance. This plant thrives well in low light and even helps to purify the air in the home. The spider plant is also visually appealing and comes in a few different varieties that you can choose from based on the colour and style you prefer. Cats are drawn to spider plants, and they’re safe to feature in the home since they’re nontoxic. Just be sure to hang the plants out of reach of pets so cats won’t ruin the plants or pots.

Indoor Palm Plants

There are lots of palm plants to choose from, and they are safe for indoor display if you have cats or dogs. Varieties include ponytail, bamboo, parlour, and Areca, and they are very easy to grow. Palms don’t require lots of light, which means they can thrive in any area of the home. However, avoid putting sago palms in your home since these could be toxic to dogs and cats.

African Violet

The African violet has vivid flowers that are safe for pets, and the plant doesn’t take much effort to maintain. Make sure the African violets are in a warm area of the home and get lots of sunlight, and the flowers will bloom throughout the year.

Bamboo

Bamboo is particularly attractive to cats since they sometimes like to chew on the plant. Bamboo is nontoxic for animals, and the plants help to balance harmful chemicals in the air. They are also great to collect if your home has a tropical theme.

Cast Iron Plant

This plant is extremely durable and thrives in all rooms of your home. Cats have been known to chew the leaves, and while this can ruin the plant, the animals will not be harmed. The plant has deep green leaves that have a ruffle quality and pointed tip and is an evergreen so that it will grow in both warm and cool clients.

Prayer Plant

The prayer plant is named for the way its leaves fold in the evening, as if in prayer. The plant doesn’t take much maintenance to grow indoors and won’t harm pets. For the prayer plant to look its best, it needs lots of humidity and soil that is well-drained. Bright indirect sunlight is best for this plant, and it will yield small yellowish-white flowers if it is tended to properly.
